Feasibility Studies and Business Plans Our holistic approach and access to a broad base of disciplines make us well-suited to undertake business plans and feasibility studies for urban and rural projects. We treat these as more than a straight technical exercise but engage with communities to allow them to express needs and aspirations and where possible see that these are met. Design Capability We have implemented many projects in the field of roads, water supply and sanitation and have recently increased ourdesign and project management capacity in order to implement major road and large water and sanitation projects. We aim to maximize the utilisation of economically viable labour intensive methods of construction. Road, Highway and Airport Geometric Design, Pavement Design and Road Rehabilitation Within the SMM engineering division, we have specialists with postgraduate academic qualifications and 20 years experience with road rehabilitation design and materials. Our senior staff have worked on projects on national freeways, provincial rural roads, urban arterials and residential roads. We also specialise in gravel access roads and developing rural and urban residential townships. Our service includes all the phases from preliminary design through to tender and contract documentation,drawings, site supervision and contract administration. Water and Sanitation SystemsSMM is experienced in the provision of all stages of water and sanitation projects in rural and urban locations. Previous projects have involved building bulk water reservoirs, pumped systems and water reticulation. Our team also has extensiveexperience in the design and implementation of waterborne sanitation systems in rural, peri-urban and urban situations. Our projects maximized labour utilisation and job creation opportunities for the local community wherever possible. Dispute Resolution SMM has a qualified arbitrator available to conduct arbitrations, mediation and conciliation and our staff are experienced at dealing with situations where these services may be required. Community Involvement At SMM design is not approached as solely an engineering exercise but is undertaken with a view to making the product conform to the needs of the potential users in terms of design and affordability. Labour Intensive Construction For many years SMM has been instrumental in the development of labour intensive construction projects in rural and urban areas. We specialize in adapting traditional construction methodology to maximize the utilisation of labour and creating jobs. Our tender and contract documentation is specifically adapted to identify and specify selected operations which can be carried out in a labour intensive manner. Tender Documentation and Contract Supervision SMM utilises the most appropriate forms of contract documentation to suit the specific project. These include project specifications developed specifically for labour intensive projects, or a combination of plant based and labour based projects, or rapid procurement systems. Project Management SMM has senior staff with many years of experience in project management, cost control and time scheduling for a variety of civiland structural projects including large, multi disciplinary projects.
